Call for Submissions! Youth Action Forum Magazine

The Winter 08/09 issue of Forum is on Building Alliances and will focus on the ways youth are working together across difference to challenge oppression. This occurs individually, as we personally negotiate intersecting identities, and communally, as we build bridges between people from diverse social locations. We want to highlight the importance of allying so that we can collaborate rather than become segregated in our struggles. Whether it is racism, sexism, classism, ableism, or homophobia, youth are learning and practicing new ways to act as allies, supporting each other in collective resistance.

We welcome your submissions in the form of articles, interviews, poetry, music lyrics, personal reflections, rants, short stories, photography, art, etc. Multimedia submissions (i.e. YouTube videos) are also appreciated and will be featured on our website. Written submissions should be no longer than 1500 words in length. What does “Building Alliances” look like in your life, school, home, community, peer group, religious organization, activist network? How have things changed over time? What do you envision for the future? Send us stories about how you create alliances with others to challenge oppression (who was involved, what did you do, where did this happen, what was the process, what difficulties did you face, what did you learn about yourself and others). Write about artists or groups you know (or ones you’d like to start) that are working together across difference. Please email all submissions (or fleeting ideas, brainstorming, questions, related advertising, upcoming events you’d like published) by October 31, 2008 to forum@youthactionnetwork.org.

We’re always looking for new volunteers to assist with layout, art, content, writing, funding, and distribution. If you’re interested in becoming an Editorial Collective member and helping with the publication of Forum, we’d love to hear from you!
