Call for Submissions! Youth Action Forum Magazine

Forum Add comments

Youth Action Forum is a national magazine published by and for Canadian youth ages 15-25. Forum’s mandate is to be a place for young people to share their thoughts, opinions and experiences with other youth across the country. Each issue of Forum is geared towards motivating and encouraging youth to educate themselves and be proactive in their communities.

Our next issue of Forum is on Building Alliances, and will focus on the ways in which youth activists are building links across oppression. We want to highlight the importance of allying different oppressed groups so that we can all work together rather than being segregated in the struggle. Whether it be racism, sexism, homophobia, or ableism, youth are learning and practicing new ways to act as allies, supporting each other in struggle. Send us stories about how you created alliances with other groups that have been oppressed. Write about any artists or groups that you know are working across different barriers of oppression.

We welcome your submissions in the form of articles, poetry, personal reflections, short stories, photography and art. Multimedia submissions (i.e. YouTube videos) are welcome and will be featured on our website. Written submissions should be around 600 words in length, with the exception of poetry. Please email all submissions by June 30th to forum@youthactionnetwork.org, as well as any other enquiries. New Editorial Collective members are always welcome!

Summer Call for Submissions - Family:

In the months of May and June we celebrate our Mothers and Fathers.

Some schools of thought believe that the celebration of mothers began with the ancient Greeks, who celebrated Cybele, and ancient Romans who celebrated Juno, two great mothering Goddesses, in the weeks leading up to Easter. In the 1500’s and onwards, Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom was observed as a Christian celebration of the Virgin Mary and the ‘Mother Church’ (one’s first church). The visiting of the ‘Mother Church’ allowed separated families to reunite on Mother’s Day as indentured female servants were released by their masters in order to visit their families in church.
It is believed that Father’s Day originated in the early 1900’s as a complement to Mother’s Day in order to celebrate all facets of parenting.
Today, both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day most often celebrate one’s parents. In a secular sense, both days are a celebration of those who raised you.

In this issue we ask readers to reflect on their families; mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, guardians, siblings, grandparents and those others who played a significant role in your upbringing. What would you say to them if you could say anything? How do you see your family reflected in you? Who are the important characters in your life and what role do they play?
