Youth Action Network (YAN) is looking for a conference coordinator. YAN is dedicated to helping youth become more informed and actively involved in order to move towards a just and sustainable society. We strongly believe in the ability of youth to affect change in the world. We understand the need for a stronger voice and for greater participation in our local and global communities. The main functions of YAN are to provide information and promote action. YAN is always looking to develop the capacities of youth in a variety of different manners and through this position are interested in helping a young person develop organizing, outreach, planning, and marketing skills.
Your primary responsibilities as Ruckus Coordinator will involve planning and implementing Ruckus during November.
Ruckus! is a two-day, anti-racism conference for youth, and a week-long series of events leading up to the conference.

The Ruckus Coordinator is responsible for the organization and coordination of all the Ruckus events, involving tasks such as:
- Outreach
- Develop publicity/media campaigns
- Coordinate the Ruckus section of the YAN website which acts as a central point to Ruckus week activities
- Coordinate volunteers and student placements to work on events for Ruckus.
- Recruit and organize a steering committee and/or organizing team
- Draw partnerships with youth organizations, non-governmental organizations, governmental bodies/groups, and individuals for the endorsement, development or implementation of Ruckus and related projects.
- Communicate with school board representatives and teachers.
- Develop a project budget in consultation with the YAN financial directors and manage expenditures according to the budget.
- Produce a final report on the outcomes of all projects undertaken, as well as recommendations for future projects.
- Pursue external funding and grants for Ruckus 2009
This contract position will begin the week of June 23, ending the last week of August (dates flexible). The hours for July and August will be 20 hours a week and 25-30 hours a week for the first two weeks of September (as needed). Salary will be $12 per hour, with some benefits.
Job requirements:
Ability to recruit and coordinate volunteers.
Work from a strong anti-oppression framework.
Sound knowledge of social and environmental justice issues.
Familiar with publicity work; should be media-savvy.
Project budget management.
Knowledge of grant/proposal writing.
Self-starter/Self-directed.
Assets:
Layout and design skills.
Web design skills.
French or other language.

Our office is located in downtown Toronto at Queen and John. We offer a very positive work environment, with possibilities for future contract work. You are free to work out of the office or out of your home, or both. There is very little supervision so you must be motivated and capable of working individually, with little management.
