TORONTO – Youth Week 2007 – a youth-initiated week-long celebration of youth culture was held from May 5-May 12 at venues throughout the city. The Theme for Youth Week 2007 captures the spirit of Youth Week: “I Am, Because We Are” – is an English translation of traditional South African Ubuntu philosophy that speaks to the importance of community, connection and our relationships to one another.
The Youth Week Organizing Committee –comprised of young people from throughout the GTA- were concerned about the isolation and alienation many young people are feeling today. They wanted to inspire other young people to get more involved in their communities and to show Toronto that young people care about their schools and their neighbourhoods. Youth Week – a celebration held since 1995 highlights youth accomplishments around the world. Youth Week events were held in: Toronto, Hamilton, British Columbia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and throughout Europe this year. Coordinated by the Youth Action Network (YAN), Youth Week 2007 encourages young people to take action on issues that are important to them. Nothing is too big – or too small - to tackle: global warming, racism, bullying, globalization, child labour, HIV/AIDS or gun violence. Youth can set up a display at school, create a petition, host a lunchtime workshop or a movie night – everyone can get involved!
